Michelle Waters

Tiger Saint, 2022, Acrylic on wood panel, 10” round

🔴 SOLD

Statement: With fewer than 3,200 remaining in the wild, tigers are the closest to extinction of all the big cat species. While tigers originally inhabited the land from Turkey through to the eastern shore of Asia, today they exist in only 4% of their historic range. Originally there were 9 subspecies of tigers; but 3 subspecies have been driven to extinction over the past 80 years. There are more tigers in captivity in the U.S. as “pets” than in the wild, a very sad statement on our disconnection from the natural world. In the last century, 97% of wild tiger populations have disappeared because of human activities and overpopulation.

Tigers are going extinct due to poaching, illegal trade of their skin, bones, and other body parts for the Asian medicine trade, habitat loss (palm oil is a big culprit), and the climate crisis.

What can the average person do to help? Having small families, eating lower on the food chain (more plants and no or fewer animal products), consuming less, using less plastic, not using poisons, and educating oneself about palm oil and all the many names it goes by are all crucial actions for each of us who care about wildlife to take. I will donate 20% of the purchase price of “Tiger Saint” to the Center for Biological Diversity.
